Connections

What your browser can really see and do. For switches a web page isn't allowed to touch, you get the exact steps. No fake toggles.

Checking…

Wi-Fi

Browsers can't scan or join networks

Web pages can't list nearby networks or join one. You can share your network as a QR code: guests scan it with their camera to join.

Share Wi-Fi by QR (made on this device, nothing is sent)

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Settings › Wi-Fi. Or swipe down from the top-right for Control Center.
  • Android: Settings › Network & internet › Internet. Or swipe down for Quick Settings.
  • Mac: Menu bar Wi-Fi icon, or System Settings › Wi-Fi. Open Wi-Fi settings
  • Windows: Taskbar network icon, or Settings › Network & internet › Wi-Fi. Open Wi-Fi settings

Bluetooth

Web Bluetooth works in Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop and Android. Firefox and Safari don't support it.

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Settings › Bluetooth to pair headphones, speakers and keyboards.
  • Android: Settings › Connected devices › Pair new device.
  • Mac: System Settings › Bluetooth. Open Bluetooth settings
  • Windows: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Add device. Open Bluetooth settings

NFC

Web NFC works only in Chrome on Android. Other browsers can't read or write tags.

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Nothing to turn on: hold the top of your iPhone near a tag. For Apple Pay, open Wallet.
  • Android: Settings › Connected devices › Connection preferences › NFC.

Cellular

Read-only

Browsers only report cellular on Android Chrome. Signal bars and carrier stay private.

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Settings › Cellular (or Mobile Data). Turn off data per app at the bottom of that screen.
  • Android: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Mobile data.
  • Mac: Macs use your iPhone's Personal Hotspot for cellular (see Hotspot).
  • Windows: Settings › Network & internet › Cellular (only on PCs with a SIM). Open cellular settings

Hotspot

Device settings only

Sharing your phone's internet is a system switch no website can flip. Here's where it is:

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Settings › Personal Hotspot › Allow Others to Join. Set a strong Wi-Fi password.
  • Android: Settings › Network & internet › Hotspot & tethering › Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Mac: Join an iPhone hotspot from the Wi-Fi menu (Instant Hotspot), or share a Mac's connection in System Settings › General › Sharing › Internet Sharing.
  • Windows: Settings › Network & internet › Mobile hotspot. Open Mobile hotspot

Tor

Needs the Tor app

A website can't route you through Tor. Use the official Tor apps, then open Find inside them. Tor hides your IP from the sites you visit; it doesn't make you anonymous if you sign in.

Airplane mode

Device settings only

Websites can't turn airplane mode on or off. Find notices when you go offline and resumes when you're back.

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Control Center (swipe down from top-right) › airplane icon. You can turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on while it stays on.
  • Android: Swipe down twice for Quick Settings › Airplane mode.
  • Mac: Macs have no airplane mode: turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from Control Center.
  • Windows: Taskbar network icon › Airplane mode, or Settings › Network & internet. Open Airplane mode

Screen mirroring & cast

Use your device's mirroring

This browser can't start a cast itself. Mirror your whole screen from your device instead:

How to change it on your device
  • iPhone / iPad: Control Center › Screen Mirroring (two rectangles) › pick your Apple TV or AirPlay TV.
  • Android: Quick Settings › Cast / Smart View / Screen cast. In Chrome: ⋮ menu › Cast.
  • Mac: Control Center › Screen Mirroring. In Chrome: ⋮ menu › Cast… to a Chromecast.
  • Windows: Press Windows + K to connect to a wireless display. In Chrome/Edge: ⋮ menu › Cast.
