Legal ways people lower crypto taxes
- Track cost basis. Record what you paid, fees included, for every coin. Without it, gains can look larger than they are
- Hold over a year. In the US, assets held more than a year usually get lower long-term capital gains rates
- Harvest losses. Selling at a loss can offset gains, and up to $3,000 a year of extra loss can offset other income
- Choose which lots you sell. With good records, specific identification lets you pick which purchase a sale comes from
- Give appreciated crypto. Donating to a qualified charity can avoid the gain and may be deductible; large gifts need an appraisal
- Use tax-advantaged accounts. Some retirement accounts can hold crypto and defer or avoid tax under their rules
- Report income correctly. Staking, rewards and payments are usually income when received; reporting on time avoids penalties
